Dr K M Baharul Islam

Professor and Chair, Centerof Excellence in Public Policy and Government

Dr K M Baharul Islam has been teaching and researching in the area of Communication, Development, Information Technology policy and legal issues for more than two decades.A senior expert in Communication for Development (C4D) and ICT for Development (ICT4D), he has also taken keen interest in educational planning and management, e-Government strategies, cyberspace management and telecom regulations. Besides teaching and research, his professional assignments included development of national strategic plans for and evaluation of ICT programmes in Asian and Sub-Saharan African countries.

Much of Dr Islam’s recent research is based on his extensive works with UN agencies. Starting as a Consultant for UNESCO in Cambodia in 1998, he later worked on ICT Policy, Plans and e-Government Strategies for Sub-Saharan African countries and regional economic groups under the UN Commission for Africa (UNECA) during 2003-2006. He developed e-Government Strategies and National ICT plans for several countries. In 2006-2007, Dr Islam served under UNESCAP, Bangkok to conduct an ICT Access Survey in the Asia-Pacific region.

He holds LLM in Telecom and Information Technology Laws from the University of Strathclyde (UK), MA (English) from AMU, Aligarh, MBA from IK Gujral University. He did first PhD from the Tezpur University (India) in English and a second PhD on Transitional Justice from Don Bosco University Guwahati. He did Post-Doctoral studies at Asian Institute of Technology (Bangkok) on new technologies in education. Besides he has also done B.Ed. specializing in Educational Planning and Administration.

Dr Nitin Singh
Dr Nitin holds 17 years of experience spanning academics and industry. He earned the Fellow Program in Management from IIM Bangalore and has worked for KPMG, Hexaware and HPCL during his stint in industry and with IIM Indore in a research and academic role. During the course of his career, Nitin has led projects relating to supply chain analytics, forensics, Big Data modeling, simulations, risk and other projects with quantitative component. His strong experience in business analytics contributes to the pragmatic approach adopted in his publications and teaching in the field of analytics and Big Data. Nitin has published in international peer-reviewed journals published by Blackwell, Wiley, Association for Computing Machinery, Atlantis and Taylor & Francis. His consulting experience has a track record of working very closely with C-Level and senior executives across manufacturing, financial services, healthcare and CPG in designing, developing and delivering strategic solutions that are measurable, relevant and actionable. He has presented papers at more than 30 conferences both nationally and internationally. Nitin is a visiting research fellow with Hong Kong PolyUniversity and National University of Singapore. He has won research projects from MHRD, ILOG (USA), ECCH (UK) and was the Aditya Birla scholar at IIM Bangalore during his doctoral studies. He contributes regularly to business periodicals with Point-of-View articles of contemporary and strategic interest. Nitin was one of the finalist for Edelman prizeat Edinburgh for Operational Research in 2002. Dr Singh serves on the board of Intellution (backed by a large PE fund) and KLA Group. He is also empanelled on EdCIL’s “Platinum” panel of consultancy where he engages frequently in consulting work. Nitin is also reviewer for Computers in Industry (Elsevier) and Resources Policy (Elsevier).

Dr Abhradeep Maiti
Dr. Abhradeep Maiti holds a PhD in Economics from Middle Tennessee State University. He has taught various courses such as Managerial Economics, Microeconomics, Econometrics, etc. at both undergraduate and graduate levels. His research interests include Applied Microeconomics and Applied Econometrics. He has so far worked on issues involving estimation of labor demand, effects of intervention on early childhood outcomes, effects of government policies on labor market outcomes, and effects of technology on society. His work has been published in various peer-reviewed economics journals such as Journal of Regional Science, International Review of Law and Economics, Journal of Business and Economics Perspectives, and World Cultures eJournal. He obtained his Master’s degree in Economics from University of Oklahoma. Prior to joining IIM Kashipur, he briefly worked as a Senior Economist for an analytics firm.

Dr Nandita Roy
Dr Roy has worked with National Geographic Channel, India supervising a team comprising of three production houses in Calcutta and one in Bombay. She handled content editing of shows telecast in National Geographic Channel and Fox Televison and creative head of dubbing operations in West Bengal. She also taught at the National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, India. She her PhD at the Department of Media and Communication, University of Leuphana, Germany and the Department of English, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India. She worked on a project entitled ‘The Gender Implications of the National Knowledge Commission Recommendations’. She worked with UNICEF on policy documents and reports on Education.

Ms Roy directed, cinematographed and edited, ‘Voices of Women from Mizoram’, a documentary on women’s empowerment in Mizoram, India, 2011. The documentary was screened at the National Workshop of a collaborative project on Women’s Empowerment and Education conducted by McGill University, Canada and Jadavpur University. She was the Editorial Consultant for the documentary on the story of SanthiSoundarajan, India titled ‘Y can’t I run?’ The documentary was screened at Dialogues, the 5th Annual Calcutta LGBT Film & Video Festival in December 2011 and at Mumbai Queer Film Festival in May 2012. Also a part of the documentary was screened at Jadavpur University, India in 2012, and at University of Minnesota, USA, BABA Retreat, Japan and MGAHV, India in 2011 and at University of Bath, UK and the International Sport Law & Business Conference in Istanbul University, Turkey in 2010.

Dr Safal Batra
Dr Safal Batra is an assistant professor of strategy at Indian Institute of Management Kashipur. He is the recipient of ISCI best thesis award during his doctorate at IIM Ahmedabad. His research surrounds strategic and cognitive determinants of small business performance. His major publications include: Performance implications of industry appropriability for manufacturing SMEs: The role of technology orientation (co-authored); Efficacy of risperidone augmentation to antidepressants in the management of suicidality in major depressive disorder; Large-scale roll-to-roll fabrication of vertically oriented block copolymer thin films; Entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance in Indian SMEs: Universal and contingency perspectives and Field assisted self-assembly for preferential through thickness (“z-direction”) alignment of particles and phases by electric, magnetic, and thermal fields using a novel roll-to-roll processing line.

Dr Smarak Samarjeet
Dr Smarak Samarjeet is an assistant professor of Communications at Indian Institute of Management Kashipur. holds an MBA in Marketing and HR from Utkal University, Odisha. He also has a Master of Arts degree in Mass Communication. He has done his PhD at Pondicherry University. He has taught courses such as Communication Theory, Online Journalism, Principles in Journalism, Advertising, Public Relations, and Development Communications at the Postgraduate level. He specializes in Digital Marketing, Social Media Marketing, Public Relations for Digital Media, Content Writing, Technical Writing, and Public Service Advertising (PSA). His research interests include Political Economy of Media, Rhetoric Studies, Semiotics Studies, Film Studies, Advertising, Feminist Media Studies, Ideological Analysis, Sentiment Analysis etc. He was one of the 100 young leaders selected, to represent India at the Women Deliver 3rd Global Conference at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2013.

Dr V Rajagopalan, IAS (Rtd)

Visiting Fellow, Green MBA Program

Dr Rajagopalan did his BTech and MTech from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He obtained his Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Eqiv to MBA) from Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. He also did MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College, University of London and PhD in Air Pollution Modeling from University of Lucknow. He joined Indian Administrative Service and retired as Secretary to the Govt. of India, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, He has served at senior/policy making levels in the field of Environment that includes Director, Environment in Uttar Pradesh (1992-93), Joint Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India (1998-2003), Chairman, Central Pollution Control Board, Government of India (2003-2006) and Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change. His expertise includes formulation of EIA Guidance Manuals and spread across the sectors of (i) energy (thermal and hydro power), (ii) industry (bulk drugs, synthetic organic chemicals, pesticides, distilleries, dyes and dye intermediates, paper and pulp, cement, metallurgical industries, etc.), and (iii) infrastructure (highways, ports and harbors, etc

Dr Athiqul H Laskar
Dr Laskar studied at University of Kansas and did his PhD in Communication from Pacific Western University, Honolulu, Hawaii campus, USA. He was training at US Army Military schools and served in US army around USA, Europe, Korea, and Japan. He served the US Army Service as NATO Commander (Neighmagan, Holland Sector), Europe and was a recipient of US Army Shadow box from President Clinton. He worked as a faculty of sports psychology and communication at Bergen County Community College, Paramus, New Jersey, USA, Paterson Community college, New Jersey, USA. He worked with Noble Laureate Mother Theresa on humanitarian projects (Leper colony at Nongpoh, Shillong, India) in 1975-1981. He wrote several books and published widely in America. Some of his books include: My Dear Pixy, Writers Club Press. Sarwar Raza, FCS & LL.B
Mr Sawrwar Raza is a Fellow of Institute of Company Secretaries of India and he practiced as a Company Secretary (PCS) from 2002 to 2010. He was admitted as an Advocate by the Bar Council of Delhi in 2010 and since then he is practicing as Corporate Lawyer. As a company secretary he has handled various matters relating to Companies Act, Income Tax Act, Service Tax, FEMA, FCRA and various other corporate matters including incorporation and post-incorporation compliances of many Limited and Private Limited Companies including LIC Cards Services Limited.

Presently practicing as Corporate Lawyer he has developed reputation in areas of Corporate and Commercial Laws, Companies Act, Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), Taxation Laws, Trademarks, Civil Laws. He represented various cases in Company Law Board, Taxation Tribunals and the High Court. He is an advisor to Ministry of Finance and advising Specified Undertaking of UTI and UTI group. I also advises Government of India on effective Corporate Social responsibility. He has recently incorporated National Financial Holdings Company Limited, a company wholly owned by Government of India under Ministry of Finance.

In the area of corporate law, his clientele includes major companies like Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited, Religare Group, Millenium Energy, FMIT Systems, Elan Greentech Energy, Pamposh Constructions, Lotus Group, Sobell Finance, Hilltop Rubbers, SarasIspat, Habitat Hotels Group, Ishwar Industries Limited, etc. His multinational practice covered portfolios like Universal System, IndraSistemas, Medfin, Macawber, Watchnet, Durlum Group GMBH, Intergen Energy, Carinex etc.

Dr Asif Khan

Academic Associate

Dr Asif Khan did his MSW and PhD in Social Work from AMU, Aligarh. His doctoral thesis was on “Problems and Prevention of Juvenile Delinquency through Social Work Intervention: A study of the inmates of Observation Homes/ Special Homes in New Delhi”. Presently, he is an Academic Associate in Communications Area at Indian Institute of Management Kashipur. Prior to that Dr Asif worked as a Research Assistant at the Center it its ICSSR funded research project entitled “Mitigating Disasters and Promoting Development in Uttarakhand: A Participatory Model of The State, Civil Society, and Media”. He manged stakeholder participation in the project and specifically worked on gender aspect in disaster mitigation activities and role of women in disaster management. His recent publications include: Intrinsic Link between gender vulnerability and Disaster(Palgrave, In Press) and A Quest for Political Space by Muslims in India (Perspectives in Social Science, Vol 16, July 2016, University of Dhaka)

Ankit Kumar Srivastav

Senior Research Fellow

Ankit Kumar Srivastav had completed his Bachelor of law (i.e. BA LLB) with honours in Intellectual Property Law from School of Law, KIIT University in 2012. In same year, he outperformed Common Law Admission Test 2012 conducted by National Law University Jodhpur and took admission in National Law Institute University Bhopal, where he completed his Masters in Laws with Specialization in Intellectual Property and Business Laws in 2014. He submitted his dissertation on “Issues relating appointment of Government Servant as Arbitrator: An analysis” Apart from it, he had participated in various national seminar and Workshop.

Before joining as Senior Research Fellow at Center of Excellence in Public Policy and Government, Indian Institute of Management Kashipur, he had worked as a Senior Executive- Department of Legal Affairs, Rhydburg Pharmaceutical Ltd, Dehradun. Currently, he is attached to Center’s projecton“Performance Indicators for Subordinate Courts and suggestive policy/ procedural changes for reducing civil case pendency” funded by the Ministry of Law and Justice.
