In today’s fast moving world where products and strategies are so quickly duplicated and information is available at the click of a mouse button, the only sustainable competitive advantage that organizations can bank on is its human resource. Keeping this in view, IIM Kashipur organized its annual HR conference Samanvaya ’14 at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. It was attended by reputed dignitaries from the field of Human Resource Management from all over the country.

The event started with a keynote speech from Mr. Dilip Misra (President and Group HR Head, JK Group)on the theme – ‘Reskilled HR : Transforming HR professionals into skilled Business consultants’. He talked about how an HR manager should keep the future in mind while recruiting budding talent. “Most HR managers look at recruitment as a cost centre. Instead, it should be looked at as an investment centre. The business acumen of an HR manager lies in his foresight of the business challenges faced by the organization in the future and recruiting in that regard”, he said His enlightening speech was followed by a panel discussion on the same topic.

The second keynote speech was by Dr. Kuldeep Singh (Sr. Director - HR (Global Head - L&D; OD/OE; Corp –HR, UST Global) where he talked on 'Talent Analytics: Need of the hour'. Talent Analytics is the application of sophisticated data mining and business analytics techniques to human resources data. “Talent analytics is gaining great traction nowadays. It is with the use of talent analytics that Amazon can so effectively use its ‘Ship before you order’ function and Google can predict the most relevant questions to ask a candidate in an interview.” He also gave an example of Michael Lewis’ book ‘Moneyball- The Art of Winning an Unfair Game’ which talks about similar techniques used to assemble a competitive team for the Oakland Athletics baseball team despite a low revenue. An interesting panel discussion followed, where the panellists gave further insights on the topic.

The event proved to be a great success in serving as a platform for the dignitaries to share their thoughts with the eager students of IIM Kashipur. It also gave a chance for the budding managers to leave the venue with practical examples of how various HR theories and concepts are applied in the real world.
